LES ÉCLAIREURS LIGHTHOUSE DATA
Embark on the Ksar Sailboat to explore the Beagle Channel on a three-day or full-day cruise to Les Éclaireurs Lighthouse, the Lighthouse at the End of the World. Discover spectacular wildlife and landscapes. An unforgettable adventure in the far south of Patagonia awaits you!
Discover the magic of Navegaciones al FaroLes Éclaireurs, wrongly called the ‘Lighthouse at the End of the World’, in the stunning Beagle Channel of Tierra del Fuego, Argentina! This iconic lighthouse, located on the NE islet of the Les Éclaireurs islet group, is a gem you can’t miss during your visit to Ushuaia.
Imagine sailing through the waters of the Beagle Channel, surrounded by spectacular landscapes, as you approach this majestic structure. With its truncated brick tower, painted in vibrant white and red stripes, the lighthouse stands out as a symbol of orientation for sailors in these tumultuous waters.
Once you arrive, you will be greeted by the imposing presence of the lighthouse, with its lantern shining 22.5 meters above sea level, emitting flashes of white and red light that dance on the sea horizon every 5 seconds. Don’t miss the opportunity to capture this unique moment in your photographs.
The story behind Navegaciones Les Éclaireurs is also fascinating. Named by Frigate Captain Luis Fernando Martial during the French La Romanche expedition in 1882-1883, these islets hold secrets and legends that will transport you to bygone eras of exploration and adventure.
Although the lighthouse is closed to the public, its presence remains an iconic landmark in Ushuaia Bay. From the water, you will have the opportunity to admire its beauty and feel part of the region’s maritime history.
Some tourist agencies in Ushuaia promote exciting excursions to the lighthouse, often under the erroneous name of «lighthouse at the end of the world.» However, it is important to note that this designation is incorrect. Jules Verne’s novel of the same name, which popularized the idea of the «end of the world,» was actually inspired by the San Juan de Salvamento Lighthouse, located on the remote Isla de los Estados. However, despite its beauty and historical significance, this lighthouse is not the famous «lighthouse at the end of the world» portrayed by Verne.
The confusion arises due to the similarity with the southern region of Argentina and the association of the term «end of the world.» Les Éclaireurs Lighthouse, although not the lighthouse featured in Verne’s novel, is still a must-see for tourists exploring picturesque Ushuaia and its surroundings. The Isla de los Estados Lighthouse is much wider and has more surface area as it has a shelter inside as a home.
So, when planning your trip to Ushuaia and its surroundings, remember that the Les Éclaireurs Lighthouse is a must-see stop, but keep in mind that it is not the famous «lighthouse at the end of the world» from Jules Verne’s novel.
