Discover Almanza Port, a hidden treasure in Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. Located at the southern tip of the continent, this picturesque fishing village offers an authentic and captivating experience for visitors looking to explore the natural beauty and unique culture of the region. Almanza Port is a small fishing town located on the east coast of the Beagle Channel, 75 km from the city of Ushuaia. To get there, you must take National Route n°3 and then Provincial Route J. through the waters of the Beagle Channel from Ushuaia.
The name of the place comes from a sawmill that operated in the area between the 40s and 50s. In 1966 the Argentine Naval Prefecture installed a detachment that still exists. The first civil settlements were recorded in the 90s, and around 2001, a group of artisanal fishermen settled permanently in the place.
Known as the southernmost port in the world, Almanza Port is the ideal starting point for exploring the stunning Beagle Channel and its surroundings. Its crystal-clear waters and rugged landscapes are the perfect setting for a wide range of outdoor activities, from kayaking and boat trips to hiking and wildlife watching.
The location of this town is ideal for exploring the coastal area and its attractions. A few kilometers away is the Harberton Ranch, owned by the Bridges family, a historical site that has its own museum and an offer of activities such as hiking and sailing. Opposite Almanza Port, on the other side of the Beagle Channel, is the Chilean town of Puerto Williams, on Navarino Island.
One of the main attractions of Almanza Port is its gastronomy. As a fishing town, it is famous for its delicious seafood and fresh fish. Local restaurants offer traditional dishes such as king crab, toothfish and scallops, prepared with fresh, authentic ingredients. Visitors can enjoy a unique culinary experience while watching local fishermen bring in their catch of the day.
In addition to its exquisite gastronomy, Almanza Port is also known for its charming atmosphere. The quaint wooden cabins and colorful fishing boats create a picturesque landscape that invites visitors to explore its streets and enjoy its calm and relaxed atmosphere. Locals are known for their hospitality and warmth, making visitors feel at home from the moment they arrive.
For nature lovers, Almanza Port offers a variety of options to explore the surrounding area. Nearby trails offer stunning views of the surrounding coastline and mountains, while boat tours allow visitors to get up close and personal with the region’s incredible marine life. Bird watchers will also enjoy the abundant wildlife that inhabits the area, including penguins, cormorants and albatrosses.
Almanza Port today has an anchorage and a commercial dock that receives fishing and tourism vessels. The activity carried out by artisanal fishermen focuses on the extraction of crabs and mollusks from the Beagle Channel and on bass fishing. Enterprises dedicated to the breeding of mussels, cholgas, sea urchins and trout have also been created. All these sea dishes can be tasted in the restaurants located in Almanza Port or in the city of Ushuaia.
In short, Almanza Port is a truly unique destination that offers something for all tastes and budgets. Whether you’re looking for outdoor adventures, an unforgettable culinary experience, or simply a quiet place to relax and enjoy the natural beauty, this charming fishing town has everything you need for an unforgettable vacation at the end of the world.
